Update on Passing of Dr. Craig Butz and Recovery of Teagan Butz

Chairman of the Pepin Academies Hillsborough Campuses Board and Pepin Academies Foundation Board, Dr. Jeff Skowronek.

"Dr. Craig Butz was a devoted father to his son and daughter; loving husband to his best friend and wife, Tatum Murphy; beloved son of his mom and dad, Herb and Anne Butz; cherished brother to his sister and brother; and dedicated family man to his large extended family, and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, colleagues and community.

Throughout his life, Dr. Butz never hesitated to help those around him, no matter the request.  With his passing, we’re pleased to report that his legacy of giving continued.  Dr. Butz’ family successfully donated all of his organs to other individuals and families in need, maximizing their time with their loved ones through his gift of life.

Dr. Butz’s daughter, Teagan Butz, remains in critical, but stable, condition.  Teagan successfully underwent surgery to repair her elbow, arm, and shoulder injuries which requires her to wear a cast.  She also suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury in which the extent of her injury and prognosis is not yet known.  The family takes comfort knowing that she is being tended to by the very best doctors, nurses and staff.  She is being kept comfortable and calm to allow her body to heal as her medical staff works to asses and address her long and short-term needs.  Teagan is a fighter; she has her father’s spirit.

We take great comfort in knowing that her father is an angel looking over her, making sure she knows her place remains here on earth with her mom.  We ask for continued prayers to aid her in her recovery."

Statement from Tatum Murphy, Wife of Dr. Craig Butz and Mom of Teagan Butz

“I know we are all deeply hurting from this tragic and unexpected loss; I can’t even begin to process navigating life without him.  I know, in time, I will face the grief of losing him, but right now I am focused on my sweet, beautiful little girl and her recovery.  Craig was the best dad, friend, and husband I could have ever asked for and gave me the happiest years of my life.  Our child has brought so much joy and love beyond measure into our world.  I know he would want every ounce of my energy and being centered on her right now.

The outpouring of love, compassion, and support has overwhelmed me.  I cannot begin to express my appreciation for everyone’s kindness and sincere love for our entire family.   We could not survive this without it.  This has been an unbelievably difficult time and we are so grateful for the privacy you have all given us.

Everyone is asking what they can do: pray and send your healing energy for my little girl and for me to be strong for his son and family in Canada, for his friends and teammates, for the school children that Craig served, and his colleagues at Pepin Academies.  I know the pain of losing Craig extends beyond our family to so many that knew him and loved him, from all stages of his life. I wish us all, in time, peaceful hearts.”

Please Note:

To date, a memorial service has not been scheduled but a Celebration of Life will be held in the near future for the public to attend.  As these details become available, they will be shared through the Pepin Academies and Pepin Academies Foundation websites.
